How Did Grand Rapids Become Beer City USA?

The history of beer in Grand Rapids was on the verge of being forgotten, had it not been for two intrepid brewers with an ear for the longstanding fables associated with the history of brewing in West Michigan. In 1997, these two brewmasters, Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers opened the first operational brewery in Grand Rapids in 46 years and named it Founders.

Founders Brewery is now regarded as a pioneering enterprise that founded modern brewing in the city, but the duo will hasten to explain that Grand Rapids’ brewing history began almost two centuries ago in the late 1830s. From then on, brewing bloomed in the city, and before prohibition, Grand Rapids was producing around 250 000 bottles of beer per year.

After the prohibition, the industry struggled as big companies like Anheuser Busch and Miller almost completely side-lined local competition. Over the years, the glory days of Michigan-based brewing became something of a myth, forgotten except for those who looked to find some memory of it in the city’s archives.

Dave Engbers was one of those who wanted a revival in Grand Rapids’ brewing industry. Fifteen years later, his dedication alongside others who sprung up to turn Grand Rapids into a brewing city could look back on the fruits of their labour as the Grand Rapids Public Museum opened a ‘Thank You, Beer!’ exhibit exploring this almost-forgotten history and celebrating the new breweries continuing this legacy.

In 2017, Grand Rapids pulled in 40 000 beer tourists, cementing its status as Beer City, USA.
