1. 2013 Taste of Diamonds – $2.07 million
This champagne is a blend of Grand Cru Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier with a floral, and creamy texture that is ultra refreshing. Many other champagnes offer similar flavours and drinking experiences, so why the hefty price tag?
The distinctive handmade logo in 18-carat solid gold coupled with a flawless deep-cut white 19-carat diamond in the centre is the main reason. The diamond takes the place of the usual Swarovski crystal on cheaper editions (at $211 per bottle).
The second reason is the bottle was created by Alexander Amosu, the famous British Nigerian luxury goods designer.
2. 2013 Armand de Brignac Rose 30-Liter Midas – $275,000
Gargantuan bottles of champagne are often associated with rappers, and Jay Z is one of those who’s splashed the cash on bubbly. He once ordered a bottle of 2013 Armand de Brignac Rose 30-Litre Midas. This particular bottle is equivalent to 40 bottles of champagne and weighs over 40 pounds.
Better not drop this one, waitron!
3. 2011 Armand de Brignac 15-Litre – $90,000
As we said, rap music and champagne are synonymous and the aforementioned bubbly buyer Jay Z actually owns this brand! Sold in opaque metal bottles, Armand de Brignac champagnes bear the distinctive logo of an ace of spades in pewter on its signature bottles.
4. Dom Perignon Rose 1959 – $85,000
This is a rare bottle and it was sold at a wine auction in New York City. Its provenance was the estate of a wealthy real estate broker and it’s said to be the most expensive Dom Perignon ever sold.
5. Perrier-Jouët Brut Millésimé 1874 – $55,815
The Perrier-Jouët Brut Millésimé 1874 was sold at Christie’s on December 2, 2021, for $55,815. This champagne launched in 1811 when Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët were married. Together, they started growing chardonnay grapes and opened a champagne house.
6.1996 Dom Perignon Rose Gold Methuselah – $49,000
On paying for this 6-litre baby, you’ll know that only 35 bottles have been sold. Bottled in plated gold, the champagne is said to have a singular smoky accent with a strong and sharp finish.
It is a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, using the best grapes harvested from the 17 Grands Crus in Champagne.
7. 1820 Juglar Cuvee – $43,500
Released in 1820, Swedish divers found a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea containing 168 bottles of Juglar Cuvee champagne in 2010. Three bottles were from the house of Clicquot Grand Marque and the remaining 165 were from 1820 Juglar Cuvee.
With this barnacle-encrusted bottle, you will have a champagne that is perfectly drinkable despite its age of 202 years.
8. 1959 Dom Perignon – $42,350
The Shah of Iran is said to have ordered bottles of the first vintage of Dom Pérignon Rosé chilly which was served in Persepolis celebrating the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great in 1971.
This particular champagne will be hard to find as only 306 bottles were ever made.
9. Dom Perignon White Gold Jeroboam – $34,000
Dom Perignon White Gold Jeroboam is known for its elegant bottling with a strong floral bouquet of tastes. Only sold at auctions, Dom Perignon White Gold Jeroboam is a blend of several different grapes, including pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot Meunier. Dom Perignon is manufactured by Moet and Chandon.
10. 1841 Veuve Clicquot – $34,000
This champagne was part of the Baltic shipwreck find mentioned above and remains an exclusive brand in 2022. Veuve Clicquot became popular at royal courts, particularly Imperial Russia. Founded by Madam Clicquot, the brand still bears its singular yellow-gold label and has done so since the early 19 century.
11. 1928 Krug – $21,200
This champagne was said to be the favourite tipple of King George VI and the English royal family. The doyenne of British wine, Michael Broadbent, declared this the “most magnificent champagne in the world in 1957.
After eluding Nazi interest during World War II, this vintage was released after 60 years in the Krug cellars.
12. Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1990 Millennium Cuvee Methuselah – $18,800
Cult Wine lists this champagne with one word -unavailable.
Tsar Alexander II is said to have requested that Louis Roederer reserve several bottles of the best cuvée every year. Only 2,000 bottles were produced.
13. Shipwrecked Champagne – An Average of $14,181 per bottle
The same shipwreck find referred to above has prompted fine wine and champagne makers to research storing wine in deep, cold ocean beds.
The 2010 shipwreck find has elicited much interest and research.
The Smithsonian reported in 2015 that a team of scientists led by a professor of food biochemistry at the University of Reims, Philippe Jeantet, said the champagne’s taste was “incredible”.
14. 1966 Salon Cuvee ‘S’ Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs Brut – $9,559
Said to impart aromas of brioche, hazelnut and acacia this brut also has strong hints of minerals with a long and tangy finish.
15. Moët & Chandon Dom Pérignon Charles and Diana 1961 – $4,309
This champagne was served at the wedding reception of then Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. The 1961 Vintage Cuvée Dom Pérignon was brought from France in magnums, and most were consumed.
So if you have some change to spare and are looking to get into the investment market, buying expensive and sought-after bottles could be a good choice.
