Birthdays – we all have one, whether we like it or not. Some people love birthdays and the celebrations associated with them, while other people don’t really care or particularly dislike them. Whatever the case may be, there’s no getting around the fact that they happen every year.
And I like to think that there’s something sweet about it – although you certainly share the day with many other people across the globe, it’s still a specific day on which your friends and family, the people you love the most, celebrate you. The idea behind this is pretty simple, that’s what makes it so lovely. It really is just about celebrating that you were born, you exist on that day and that you mean something to all the people that have chosen to surround you. Who wouldn’t allow that to make them feel good?
Well, it’s certainly understandable that people who aren’t necessarily surrounded by lots of loved ones and aren’t made a fuss of may not enjoy their birthday. It may even be a reminder that they don’t have those things, making it more difficult than any other day of the year, and this is completely understandable.
For those who do enjoy a good birthday though it’s fun to celebrate the people you love, or to be celebrated yourself.
But have you ever wondered who else around the world has the same birthday as you? Well, of course, you have, even if it was way back when you were just a little kid. Of course, there are only 365 options – well, 366 every four years if we’re counting Leap Years, but we’ll get to that later – so statistically, there are loads of people all around the world that have the same birthday as you. Most of them will be different ages, born in different years, but there are also bound to be several people born on the exact same day as you! Pretty crazy, right?
So then assuming that every day is someone’s birthday – even if it’s nobody that you know personally – it’s a pretty normal progression to start wondering when most people’s birthdays are.
Everybody has different general feelings about this based on their own perceptions, I guess. This depends on when your own birthday is, but more importantly, the birthdays of your loved ones. For instance, in my family of four, three of us are born in March and one in May. My three closest friends are born between February and May, my partner is in February and several of my other mates are between January and July – nobody I’m close to has a birthday after July. Pretty wild, right? Thus, particularly when I was a kid, this made me feel like the first half of the year was birthday season and the second half was just the build-up to Christmas. But of course, this is just my life and it has nothing to do with general statistics.
So on that note, let’s have a look at what I thought of as a kid as the “non-birthday” time of year – what are the rarest birthdays?

What Are Birthdays Dependent On?
Yes, of course, the birds and the bees. But don’t worry, we’re not about to get into an in-depth sex education discussion. The main point here is the fact that birthdays are reliant on conception – baby making, ahem – and so the time of year that babies are made, for a lack of a better way of putting it, directly affects when they’re born. You see what I’m getting at, right?
Sure, everybody has their theories on what affects babymaking. Many people trace birthdays back to conceptions that happened during the wintertime – you know, special, cosy cuddles, and such. While others chalk it up to special days and holidays – birthdays, Valentine’s Day, that sort of thing. But the truth is, as much as these occasions may certainly inspire people to get intimate, that’s not to say that they aren’t “getting intimate” throughout the year too – in fact, they most certainly are!
So, although it may be a laugh to trace birthdays back to specific days and times of the year, this doesn’t really have much of an influence on when most birthdays are during the year or why babies seem to be less likely to be born on some days than others.
Now, the other thing to note is how much control we have over when our children are born. Of course, we all know that the answer to that is, not very much! But with the advent of modern medicine, sometimes it is possible to have a little bit more say in when your child is born – but we’re talking about maybe a day or two if anything. This is generally in the case of C-sections and certainly doesn’t apply to all women!
What are the Least Common Birthdays?
So, let’s get down to it, shall we? The straightforward answer is probably going to be quite obvious, and the fact of the matter is, the least common birthdays tend to fall on major holidays. This includes:
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Day
- Halloween
- US Independence Day
- Valentine’s Day
…and so on. Of course, some birthdays are less common than others in different parts of the world, and the truth is, we really can’t explain it.
Apart from the fact that prominent days during the year, holidays and such, are far rarer when it comes to birthdays, there are a few other days that seem to be quite unusual too. The top rarest birthdays are all clustered towards the end of the year, mostly in November, with a few in December and a few in January.
- 23rd November
- 25th November
- 26th November
- 27th November
- 2nd January
But what are the rarest birthdays of all time? Well, here are the top four rarest birthdays:
- 25 December
- 24 December
- 1 January
- 4 July
…and we can’t forget the 29th of February, can we? Since this one only comes around once every four years, of course, the 29th of February is technically one of the rarest birthdays of them all, but we’re just trying to stick to the main 365 days of the year!
Final Thoughts on the Most Rare Birthdays in the World
Well, there you have it – the rarest birthdays in the world. We know that the days on which they fall are somewhat linked to the time of the year – which is why these trends tend to vary slightly in different parts of the world – but not totally. In some ways, it’s all random!
Some people like to associate birthdays with spiritual ideas, attaching meaning to when you’re born and associating these dates with nature, the universe and personality traits. Now, these notions have ow scientific basis, but they may be fun to consider every now and then.
But for now, enjoy your birthday and celebrate those of your loved ones – your special day only comes around once a year, after all.
