Asian countries such as the Maldives, Seychelles, Bali or the Caribbean are often thought of as the best honeymoon destinations, but Africa also has wonderful destinations for newlyweds. If you are looking for pearly white beaches, Zanzibar is the place to be. More adventurous couples can opt for a honeymoon with safaris in Kenya or on the Tanzania mainland. One thing all these countries have in common? You need to get a visa in advance.

On safari in the most beautiful national parks and reserves
What better way to celebrate the start of your new life together than in a jeep, in search of the mighty Big Five? Tanzania and Kenya are the ultimate honeymoon destinations for active couples who love animals. In Serengeti National Park, which spans both countries, the Great Migration takes place each year, when herds of millions of wildebeest, gazelles and antelopes migrate through the plains. Other impressive areas in Tanzania are the Ngorongoro Crater, where rhinos, lions and leopards can be spotted, and the Tarangire National Park, which is home to the most elephants in the world.
The best-known nature reserve in Kenya is of course the Masai Mara, which borders the Serengeti, and the two can therefore be easily combined. Another highlight is Tsavo, one of the largest national parks in the world, where red(!) elephants, crocodiles and zebras can be admired. Can’t decide which national park to visit? No worries! The visa for Tanzania is valid for a stay of 30 days. With the Kenya visa, you can even stay in the country for up to 90 days. Enough time to see several of the country’s loveliest sights!
Beach paradise Zanzibar
After all the safaris, you can sit back and relax together on the beautiful island of Zanzibar. This is a proper beach destination with palm trees, pearly white beaches and tropical temperatures. If you like the waters, you can dive, snorkel or kite surf here. Stroll together through the characteristic old centre of Stone Town on the main island of Unguja, with its small, romantic alleys. If you wish to avoid other tourists, you can travel to Pemba, a small, relatively undiscovered island that also belongs to the Zanzibar archipelago. In this oasis of peace, you can enjoy each other and the beautiful surroundings in small-scale accommodation.
No separate visa is required for Zanzibar. With a visa for Tanzania, you can travel from the mainland to Tanzania and back again as often as you like.
Preparing for your honeymoon: visa application
One of the most important preparations you need to make before your trip is to apply for a visa. Without a visa, you will not be able to enter the country and your honeymoon may even be cut short at the airport. The Kenya visa and the visa for Tanzania can easily be applied for online. All you need to do is fill in the online application form and pay the visa cost. You must then upload a few documents, including a photo of yourself and a scan of the passport. The visa for Kenya is then granted within 8 working days on average. For Tanzania, it takes on average one month. So make sure you apply for your visa on time!
One important thing to note about the Kenya visa specifically: Since the beginning of 2021, the Kenya visa can only be applied for online. Before that time, it was also possible to apply for a visa on arrival at the airport in Nairobi or Mombasa. This is no longer possible. Nowadays, you can only apply for a visa for Kenya online before departure. Don’t make the mistake many travellers have already made, and apply for your visa in advance!
